It is with heavy hearts that we remember and honour the life of our dear friend and mentor, Charles Dullea, who has departed after a short illness. For decades, Charles served with remarkable dedication as an English teacher, department chair, and — in his most historic role — the first lay principal of St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco.

From his early days in the classroom, Charles brought passion, integrity, and a genuine love for young people. He believed that English was more than grammar and literature—it was about awakening minds, inspiring hearts, and helping students discover their voice. His open-door policy and kind presence made him someone students trusted and teachers respected.

When he stepped into the role of principal, he carried with him a vision rooted firmly in service. As the first lay person to lead the school in its long-established history, Charles embraced that pioneering responsibility with grace, humility and courage. He never lost sight of the school’s traditions, yet he was unafraid to innovate, to support professional development, and to encourage continuous growth among faculty.

We will always remember Charles for his kindness, his deep respect for every member of the community, and his unwavering commitment to the mission of Jesuit education. He understood that teaching and leadership are not solely about instruction or administration—they are about compassion, relationships, and forming young men and women of character. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched, the programs he initiated, and the culture of excellence he fostered.

As we say farewell, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Charles’s family—especially his wife Pattie, his daughter Jennifer, and his many friends and colleagues. May you find comfort in the knowledge that his work made a profound difference and that his memory will continue to inspire. Although we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his life: a life marked by generous service, thoughtful leadership and genuine mentorship.

Rest in peace, dear Charles. Thank you for your service, your wisdom, and your example. We will carry forward your legacy with gratitude, respect and a renewed commitment to the ideals you so deeply believed in.

With deepest sympathy and lasting gratitude.
